Devotional: The Joy of the Lord

“Although the fig tree shall not blossom, neither shall fruit be in the vines; the labour of the olive shall fail, and the fields shall yield no meat; the flock shall be cut off from the fold, and there shall be no herd in the stalls: Yet I will rejoice in the Lord, I will joy in the God of my salvation. “.

Habakkuk 3: 17-18

God is the only true source of joy. Jobs may be lost, houses and cars may change, relationships may end but God is constant. The seasons of life are bound to change as we navigate periods of blessings and loss, victory and trials, joy and grief. The prophet Habakkuk decided that even though the situation was desperate he would find joy in God; he did not rely on his circumstances. The things of this world are fleeting but God is a wellspring that can never run dry, if God is our source we too can find joy in Him in spite of our circumstances.

If you base your joy on things around you, you’re bound to be like the ocean waves tossing to and fro. But if you plant your joy firmly in Jesus, He will be the anchor that keeps you grounded through the storms of life. There is a song that says “Turn your eyes upon Jesus, look full in His wonderful face and the things of earth will grow strangely dim in the light of His glory and grace”. It is known that what you focus on expands. The more you focus on God, the more of His goodness you see, the more you see Him at work in your life and circumstances. If you focus on your problems the more they will seem to outweigh God. The remarkable thing is that we get to choose. Choose to keep your eyes on God and draw joy from Him.
