“Trust in the Lord with all thine heart; and lean not unto thine own understanding.”
Proverbs 3:5
Miriam Webster defines trust as firm belief in the character, ability, strength, or truth of someone or something. Our whole walk with Jesus is based on trust. We trust that He is who He says He is, we trust that He died for our sins, we trust that He rose from the dead, we trust that He is coming back for us.
Faith and trust are the basis of our relationship with the Lord, so if we cannot trust Him in one point, we cannot trust Him in any point. We either believe everything He says or believe nothing, there’s no partial trust.
We are called to trust God with all our hearts, this leaves no room for doubt, no room for second guessing or wondering. Even when things look bleak or hopeless, even when it hurts, even when it doesn’t make sense we ought to trust Him.
We know enough about the character of God to know that He is trustworthy. God is not man that He should lie or the son of man that He should repent (Numbers 23:19). God is faithful (1 Corinthians 1:9), He is reliable (Joshua 21:45) and He is able (Ephesians 3:20). God always has our best interest at heart, He is always working things out for our good (Romans 8: 28) so we can rest in this instead of the lens of our understanding.
We cannot rely on our understanding as not only are we flawed beings, but we do not have the full picture like God does. Trust takes time to develop and God uses the circumstances in our lives to refine our trust in Him over time. But there are instances when we must choose to trust regardless of how we feel. Trust is a choice, not an emotion. From now on, choose to trust God in all your circumstances.
Prayer:
Lord God I am asking you to strengthen my trust in You as I do not trust you as I should. Help me to trust in your character instead of leaning on my understanding. Help me to trust you even in the difficult situations. I believe in you and I want my life to reflect my faith and trust in you. Help me to trust you with all my heart, in Jesus name I pray. Amen.
